it is interesting that Garmin is now offering map updates
at a price point close to an entry level new GPS device.

Also - the difference between Lifetime vs OneTime is....

Lifetime - https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=33379 cost is $89...

Onetime - can't get a non-serialized URL - but cost is $49....

If you are going to buy the map updates, then buy the lifetime maps.
The updates come out every three to six months. Even you do do only
two updates, you'll save money. It's ridiculous to buy a new gps
every year. At the low end, they all do the same thing -- show a
route map and maybe announce when you need to turn.

I have an older Nuvi 260 and a newer Nuvi 255.
Think I did the map updates once for each - prior to the nuMaps offering.
mainly to get some of the newly completed expressway additions around
Chicago.

Only if you think you need to get every update.
