Has anybody come across transparent contour maps for parts of France? I
have CitySelect for Europe but for my hikes I would like to have the
contour information as well, just like the Scottish Mountaineering Club
did for the UK: http://www.smc.org.uk/books/books_contour_maps.htm

Unfortunately also an exchange of money!

The UK maps are only hosted by the SMC - they were prepared from Shuttle
radar data (SRTM) by Dave Storey, AKA "GSV Three Minds in a Can". According
to him "The process really isn't too difficult" so you may want to look at
the possibility of making your own maps - particularly if you don't need to
cover a huge area of France He has posted some futher notes in a reply on
the Yahoo map_authors group - see
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/map_authors/message/4322
(although you will probably need to join the group before you can access
this link). I expect that he may be prepared to give you some more tips if
you want to have a go yourself.
Regards
David

Actually someone from France received a full education, and I thought
they were doing the whole of the country .. let me see .. "Thierry
Arbault" <tarbault at santexcel dot com>.

However I think the maps from gpsmaps.de are free if you download them
(registration required), you only have to pay to buy the whole planet
(slight exaggeration) on DVD....
