Garmin c330 software update question

I just purchased a Garmin c330. Wow is it simple to use!
It currently has version 5.40 of the software installed.
I went to Garmin's website to see about updating the
software at the link below, and they seem to charge
for the updates. Or or these some type of enhancements?
Is there a free software update available, which would
include the latest streets, stores, etc.?

That link is for getting updated maps for our gps units. They charge
for unlock code for these updated maps when they come out which is
usually once a year. The software updates for gps units are always
free.

The update you found for a charge is completely different that what
you're actually looking for at this time. Those are the map files,
not the unit programming files. Since you're posing via a Comcast
server, I presume you're somewhere in the USA and therefore you have
City Navigator NT North America v8 as the map data, which is the same
version as on that we page you mentioned.

Rumor has it that v9 will be released sometime later this summer, and
will likely be a purchase-only upgrade.
