For those that have not checked recently, there have been a number of
recent unit software updates for Garmin receivers. Some of those fix
problems that were introduced in other almost as recent software updates
(downdates?).
You can look up your unit and download updates from this page:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp
Or you can use the WebUpdater thingy (something I never use by starting
here:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download.jsp
I use the 76Cx and noticed that it is now at version 4.00.

I'm watching for 4.10. Per the 76 Yahoo group, there's apparently one around
although Garmin hasn't posted it yet to the web site.

I also do NOT like using the Webupdater. However, I've never
seen the chipset update posted as an independent update. There
may be an update for the SiRF III in your 76Cx and you won't
get it unless you use Webupdater.
The last time I used Webupdater, it first updated the unit
software, which you could do first with the independent update
thus avoiding potential webupdater bugs, then it checks the
chipset firmware and updates it if necessary. Seems to me
you had to tell Webupdater to check for additional updates
to get to the chipset update.

Dan, thanks for the heads up on that. I sort of though it would be
offered along with the other updates. And that because I had not seen
any offered, that none were available.
My 76Cx is on GPS software 3.00 now, just out of curiosity, do you know
if there is a later version?
Jack
Until recently all the Garmin software updates, including the chipset
updates, were available at information.org/perry, but they have changed to
information.net and apparently dropped the perry directory. The last time I
checked it (before it was dropped) the latest chipset version for the 76Cx
was 3.00. If you run across an update listing such as the above please post
it. I'll keep looking.
