Not with a pdf. If you own Adobe Acrobat writer you may be able to save

as text but if so you lose formatting as I recall.

I just tried it.
Garmin manual for 76csx doesn't work...just as you said.
Other PDF files work fine...but again, you are correct about formatting loss

I've just tried copying from GPSmap 76CSx manual using Okular
(alternative pdf reader). It says "Copy forbidden by DRM".
