I was all set to purchase a Nuvi 750 when I read that there were
problesm with satellite acquisition taking excessively long times.
.
According to one reviewer, to include all the features they wanted,
and keep the price reasonable, they elected to use a cheaper receiver
chip instead of the SiRF Star III which apparently is the gold
standard chip.
.
I read where it is taking up to 10 minutes to get full acquistion
whereas the SiRF Star III does it in under a minute..
The reviewer advised to totally avoid the 750 because of this attempt
at maximizing profits at the expense of performance.
.
A quick check of the Nuvi series on the Garmin website only says that
they use a "high sensitivity receiver" no specifics as to which.

If you check the icons at the bottom of the "Features" pages on the
Garmin website, the SiRF icon is conspicuosly absent at the bottom of
the features page for each of the 700 series, yet it is there on the
300 and 600 series.
.
Another reviewer says that some of the 700 series use the SiRF chip
and others use their own proprietary chip that meets the same
standards.

I don't think Garmin skimped on the chipset. If they used an
alternative brand it is probably comparable in quality to the SiRFstar
III. I have seen one report that the internal antenna isn't quite as
sensitive as the old flip-up style. Then I saw another report saying
they could discern no difference in acquisition times.
