I've been using my Garmin Nuvi 660 since Christmas and have been
impressed with it. Today the Traffic avoidance feature re-routed me
away from a traffic jam on an alternative route. I was impressed!

I plan to have the unit hard wired into my car. At the moment I am
using it via the cigar ligher socket. The lead has LED status
inidactors as follows:
Yellow: Searching for signal
Green: Normal Traffic data
Red: Momentary Synch Loss

These LEDs are next to the power plug. When I have the unit hard
wired, do I lose these LED status indicators, or can the unit be
configured such that the reassurance of 'Green' (I am receiving
traffic data) status is known?

Cheers

David

The cig lighter power cord you are currently using, with the 3 color
LEDs, is a FM traffic antenna. If you hardwire, you will lose this
function. You can buy a FM traffic antenna, however Garmin's site
doesn't list any for the 660.

Hi guys.

Thanks for the responses. I have asked Garmin support whether you can
hard wire the unit without losing the traffic function and this was
their response.

"We do not have any hard wiring kits so unfortunately we are unable to
offer support on this. However as the GTM traffic receiver is on the
unit end of the power cable, are they still able to cut the cable and
wire it into the car? The only thing you will loose is the LEDs. "

So it seems if the hard wirer can connect the supplied lead to the
internal car power without cutting off the receiver then this will
still work.

No doubt some insulation tape and wire will be required for this, but
looks like it can be done.

Not the best of designs!

Cheers,

David

David,

Please keep in mind that the FM receiver is built into the plug, not the =
Nuvi unit itself.

Best wishes,
Alex.
