Garmin has announced that it will immediately begin to make its line of
GPS and mobile electronics devices compatible with Mac OS X version 10.4
"Tiger." This makes Garmin the first major GPS designer and manufacturer to
announce direct support for Mac OS X. For the full story go to

Hah!

The devices, most of which have USB ports, are compatible. They just
need some OS X software for the Macs.

Is this really true: that existing garmin units
with USB ports will be Mac Compatible?

Is it just the Mapsource and Map Library
software that needs to be converted to Mac?

Or does the software/firmware in the gps unit
itself have to be made Mac compatible.

If the latter, will you be able to update the software
in existing units to make them Mac compatible.

I was planning on buying a Vista CX as soon as
they became available. Now this announcement
about Mac Supported Garmin units and I was
thinking I had to wait till the end of 2006 to buy.

What say ye?

Thanks, Larry

Should be.

Possibly just Mapsource. The img files may work as is. I use National
Geo Topo in my PC and it needed only a new Mac program for the same map
CDs to work in my iBook.

Unlikely .. the GPS still has to work with the PCs.

I expect the GPS receivers to be unaffected. So if you have a PC to
load maps into the Vista Cx now (or do not need to load maps now), you
should be OK.

Yes.

But please, it's not MAC (as done in the thread title). PC stands for
Personal Computer. But there is no such thing as a MAC.

It's Mac. Short for Macintosh computer.
