Good morning,
Don't laugh but I still use a Garmin GPS12 to supplement information
gathered from other sources. Unfortunately I left it stores for three
months, with fresh AA Batteries but now it won't switch on. Hasn't been
dropped.
I have been putting new rechargable batteries in it evert 3-4 hours in
the hope of recharging the internal battery but after 3 days no luck with
the switch on but the baground lighting works - not much use but anyhow!
Will a change of the internal battery solve my problem or it it a bigger
problem.
I'm in the Philippines at the moment and there are some pretty smart
kerbside 'technicians' that may be able to fix it if they know what to
do.
Thanks
Neville

I still have a GPS 12 that I use for Geocahing -
it's great -
So... what happens when you press the red power button ?
How do you get "backlight" without it powering up,
since I was going to ask about the battery level vertical bar on the left
side of the screen.

Pressing and holding the red button for a few seconds does nothing. No
welcome screen or any attempt to load satellites.
Continue pressing and releasing the red button shows a dim light green
screen. Further pressing and releasing the button gives an increasing
brightness for 2 more times. One more press and the backlight goes off.
I'm part of a group that is producing their own roadmap of the
Philippines (Garmin may consider there is not enough users to map the
country outside the main city areas). I use a Garmin Nuvi 255W but would
really like to be able to use my Garmin 12 to check and correct any POIs
that are collected.
Thanks in advance

Are you by chance contributing the data to OpenStreetMap? Assuming you don't
have a restrictive license on it, I'm sure the community would welcome the
data.
