Anyone know of any way which the memory of this unit can be increased?

My recommendation would be to sell it on eBay or someplace similar and
then buy a model with more memory.

A few years ago there were a series of reports by someone attempting to
increase the memory of his GPS V. He successfully unsoldered the
original memory device, replaced it with a larger device, and even
loaded the basemap into the new memory device. However, as of his last
report, he was never able to get MapSource or the GPS V firmware to
recognize the additional memory space and use it for loading more maps.

Can you imagine how long it would take to load, say, 256 megs of maps
via serial cable? 2 - 3 hours, maybe? This just isn't worth it. There
are people out there who find the V useful, so sell it and put that
towards a USB connected model, if you need to load more maps.

Closer to 8 hours. But I wouldn't consider that to be a serious issue.
256MB of maps is enough to cover several states so the only time I'd
need to do a reload would be before a rather extended trip in which
case I'd expect at least a day's notice. Letting the maps load in the
background during the evening or overnight wouldn't be a problem. The
real issue is that you'd need a good combination of hardware and
firmware knowledge and tools. Removal of the surface mount memory
device and replacement with a larger capacity one, reading of the
basemap from the original device and writing it to the new one, and,
most critical, modification of the firmware so the larger device is
properly recognized and can be utilized for loading maps.
For that matter, if you can successfully do all of the above there's a
pretty good chance that you'd also be able to add a USB serial
interface in place of the existing RS-232.

That's certainly the more straightforward and reasonable approach.
