I have a Garmin GPS-12 that I've used for Geocaching.
It's not fancy, but works great for me out on the trails, etc...

Had not used it for a long time, and the other day pulled it out
and found the batteries were dead.... been using the NiMh rechargables.

AND - all my waypoints and entries were GONE.
SO - it would appear that the "memory" in the GPS-12
and maybe others of the same vintage/era have some kind of memory
that needs a trickle of power ??

Luckily, I have a cable, software,
and my backup Geocaching waypoint file that I can reload.

Yes, the GPS 12 has a rechargeable battery to power memory.
Put some fresh batteries in it and leave it for a few days
then take it out to a clear view of the sky and give it
30 minutes or more to find a satellite, get the time, and
download almanacs.

If the internal battery hasn't gone bad, it will be fine.
