They are not the same thing, and you have to make sure GPSBabel is also
processing tracks and routes - I think by default it only processes
waypoints.
If you are using the GPSBabel GUI there should be a checkbox for tracks
/ routes. Or if you are using the command line, you can specify the -t
or -r options.

Hi there. I got it to work. It was a Garmin Training Centre file.

I think it must be your Google Earth settings that are wrong in some way.
I've just tried dragging a KML file onto the Google Earth main window and the
track is displayed immediately.
My GPSMap 76 produces .gpx tracklog files which I can drag straight into
Google Earth and they also show up straight away.
