To ask for a worst-case example, how does it help when you have
to do an emergency approach in poor visibility? Or even more
pointedly, can it save your life when you have an engine failure
during a VFR-on-top flight, and there is an airport within
gliding distance?

If one is foolish enough to fly VFR on top of a solid undercast and
try to rely on GPS in the event of an engine failure, the chances are

That one will not be much good at doing an emergency descent to an
unknown airport and unknown conditions on the ground. Don't let the
addition of a GPS replace good sense and judgement.
