Next summer, I will be using a 76S during an extended hike of more than
300Km and I would like to collect trackpoints (location lat/lon or UTM,
date, time and elevation) every 10M along the entire length of the
hike.
I have been advised that I could use a datalogger, but I also wonder
whether or not I could also use a handheld (i.e a Palm) to download the
day's trackpoints, at the end of each day during the hike. If this is
a viable option, what software would I need on the Palm that would
allow me to 1. communicate with the 76S in order to download the daily
track from the GPS; and 2. later to export the entrie datalog (lat/long
or UTM, date, time, altitude for each trackpoint) to a PC for
subsequent cleansing, manipilation in programs such as OXZIExplorer?
Suggestions appreciated

You can do that! Either you go with a Windows powered device like an
Ipaq and use G7toCE (freeware) or you use Pathaway on the Palm. With
the current version I would not recommend Pathaway on the PPC for that
task as it is very slow in downloading!
Depending on what device you use there are several aftermarket cables
available.

Hi David,
I have used in the past, a prog called "GPilotS" to download trackpoints
from a Garmin 12xl to an old Palm IIIx for storage when on holiday. It
worked very well and may work for you. Here is the link.
