Which one is the best retail GPS receiver to use in a typical thick
forest in south USA, trees height around 50-70 feet, typical thick
density, the sky is visible but only through the tree tops.
I am considering Garmin 60CSx or Magellan Triton/2000. Each comes with
an optional external antenna (max 30 feet for 60CSx and 9 feet for
Triton/2000) - I could always find a stick > 10 feet high a raise the
antenna to get better reception.
The factors are: consistency in getting coordinates, the best
accuracy, accurate altimeter for elevation data, etc

You must try the Garmin to see what it can do, the 60 cx, 60 csx, 76
cx, or 76 csx have the same electronics. I use the 76csx and the 76cx
the accuracy and the ability to stay locked on is almost incredible. I
make my living with these units.

Go to local hiking/climbing shops and talk to the staff who look like
they hike or climb. Of course, pay attention to what is posted in the
groups which aren't dedicated to one manufacturer, but also talk to
the shop staff. I've rarely had better advice.
