I use an UPS on every piece of critical hardware in my home. I own four of
them.
My computer cost $3000 to put together. What's $140 for a 1KW UPS ! My
Panasonic 42" plasma and Toshiba HD DVD cost $3500. What's $140 for an UPS.
My wifes machine is on an UPS and my printer, fax and phone equipment are on
a $75 UPS.

My first HD was 10 Megs, cost $2000 and lasted two years. My first CDROM for
my bulletin board cost $1400 and lasted two years. Since putting my
equipment on an UPS I haven't lost a single piece of gear. There is no
greater danger to my equipment than the friggin power company ! I watch
people buy 3 or 4 thousand $$$ worth of home entertainment equipment or one
or two thousand bucks worth of computers and then squawk at paying $150 for
good power protection.

I have 9 fans in my computer. Bit noisy but they are controlled by a NEXUS
fan controller so I only have to jack up the RPM's when I'm chowing into the
CPU or Video. Heat is a major killer of hard drives.

Anyway, we digress from the newsgroup !

Sure do. The Google study disagrees with the heat premise. At least in the
first two years, excess heat was not a factor in HD failure. Surprising.
