My PC has windows on E: rather than C: because I always want to have a
small FAT partition with DOS on it. I've noticed over the years that
Garmin software insists on using C: and apparently cannot be changed.
This is simply VERY poor programming. When I tried to install my 2008
update it came back saying I needed 800 MB or so on my C: drive. Now I
have lots of free space on my windows drive and every other application
I use recognizes this just fine but not this Garmin crap. So I dug out
my old copy of Partition Magic and resized my partition - two hours shot
to hell - and then installed the 2008 update. It also updated the maps
in my 2720 just fine too.

These guys need to get with the program.

Yes, very poor programming. Most installer routines give the user of
accepting default or custom. Custom gives an option to install to another
drive. I install all applications that are not necessary to booting into
Windows on another drive. You should be able to back up your C: drive in a
minute at most using most Ghost or Imaging software.

A minute? Do you have some super computer and super super fast hard
drive? Try a few hours with 100+GB of data on C Drive to create an
image.

FYI, I use True Image which has an incremental image feature. After doing
the first full 70GB backup, my weekly incremental backups generally take
only 15-20 through a GB lan to a hard drive on another PC.

My C: and D: are my WD740GD a 10K rpm Raptor. Lovely drive.

Formatted for 10Megs on C: and the remainder on D. I have other drives but
these two are my main drives. The rest are for storage. For XP I install
ONLY repeat ONLY the OS, drivers, and necessary (and I mean necessary)
files and the few programmes I absolutely MUST have on the C: drive. Right
now my install is 3.1Gig.

Everything else goes on D: Office, PhotoShop, FlightSim etc. No point on
those being in the boot drive.

Now I can image the C drive in about 85 seconds.

There used to be a utility that moved a program lock stock and barrel to
another drive including changing every single reference in the registry. I
don't know if it is still around, free or what !

I'll have to give it a look.
