I downloaded and installed the new software version 4.0 on mu GPSmap
76CSx. After acquiring the signals of the satelites I see in sevral
vertical bars reperesenting the signal strength the letter D. What is
the function of that letter D?

You didn't read the text what was changed? There was a small bug in 3.90
that the "D" wasn't shown if the receiver got WAAS/EGNOS correction
signals. Now it's visible againin such a cases. That's all.
Greetings, Ohm.

What Ohm said. Turn WAAS/EGNOS off from the System menu and the D's
will go away. Along with the improved accuracy you get with
"D"ifferential GPS.

DGPS is not the same as WAAS/EGNOS. DGPS works with an extra local fixed

station of which the loaction is exactly known. It results in centimeter
precision depending on the distance of the local fixed station. It is
often used in precision farming. In that case the farm has sometimes his
own fixed DGPS station, if not the signal DGPS signal comes from a
commercial DGPS fixed station.

DGPS = approx. 1-3 meter accuracy with mobile receivers costing
hundreds of dollars.
RTK-GPS = approx. 1-3 centimeter accuracy with mobile receivers
costing thousands of dollars.
A different type of base station receiver/differential corrections is
used in each case.
