Am I doing something terribly wrong here?
I only bought this unit a few months ago and after loading city select (also
bought the car kit) I just cannot get it to find streets, etc. Sometimes
some fairly major roads - recent examples are Bedford Row in London, aghhh
too many to list! When you go 'direct to' and look under addresses. Put in
the street name, it narrows it down to a few in the db but when you click on
one you usually get 'none found'. Then when you drive there you actually
see the street appear on the map so what is going wrong?
Another example is finding a particular street and you just get a list of
'street name North' or 'street name West', etc with none containing just the
street name. I also find these are often hundreds of miles away - sometimes
in France/Spain, etc.
I also thought when I had one of these units a couple of years ago, that you
could enter post code ...... did I imagine that....?
Any help or tips appreciated

Err ... yes. You are using a non-existent product. City Select has been
discontinued. The final version of City Select Europe was V7. Perhaps you
have City Navigator V8.
I don't have CS V7, but I do have CS V6 and CN V8. I have checked in
MapSource and both have Bedford Row.
On my Street Pilot III with CN V8, I was able to find 1 Bedford Row. The
trick is to input in the street field just Bedford, then select it and
scroll down the list to Bedford Row.
I hope this helps with your GPSMap 296!
Thanks for the reply Mark,
Sorry for the misprint..... Of course I meant City Navigator V8 I shall try
to explain the problem a little clearer:
Now then, following your advice I have three fields to choose from Area (set
to England); Number; and Street.
I entered Bedford and selected it,
scroll down the list and after 'Bedford Road West' is 'Bedford Street
North'. .... no Bedford Row!
The strangest thing is that when I had to revert to good old maps and
finally arrived at the destination, there it was on my GPSMap 296 screen
right in front of me. So where did I go wrong in trying to find it in the
database?
OK that's one attempt. So if I do it a different way by entering a number
for Bedford Row I get a different set of results - but still no Bedford Row!
If you type 'Bedford Ro' into the street field, that is as far as you get.
The only letter option after that is 'a' (for road) and the only options
then are Bedford Road East; North; South; and West - that is all.
If I do not type the 'Ro' but just the gap character after Bedford, I get an
additional two options: Bedford Street North and South. If I omit the gap
character I get 5 more options afterwards I.e. Bedfordbury down to
Bedfordwell.
So where am I going wrong? any ideas?
Is there no way of upgrading these units (this is only a few months old) to
a different set of software so that they can find post codes?
Any help appreciated.

I think that I have spotted your problem by searching in MapSource on my PC.
It treats the road type (Avenue, Close, Court, etc) somewhat differently
from the street name. So It lists Bedford Avenue to Bedford Way, all 'types'
of road with the name Bedford. Then it starts again with Bedford Court
Mansions, Bedford Garth ... down to Bedford Street South. You will find
Bedford Row in the first part of the list.
You can download the 25 Sep 2006 upgrade to the GPSMap 296 software via the
link at http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=889. One of the
improvements is "Improved address search when using postal codes."

Have you installed CS8 and uploaded the map segments to your GPS?

This can be the base map that only shows borders, major roads etc.
