I'm in the Chicago area and have used a couple of Nuvis equipped with
traffic info. One used an FM signal to get traffic info and that really
sucked. No signal at all until I was within about 10 miles of the the FM
transmitter. When it worked it seemed pretty accurate. I'm currently using
a Nuvi 1690 that is equipped with NuLink that receives signals from ATT cell
towers and that works much better, though it usually takes a few minutes to
synch up with ATT once the GPS powers up.
So far as I know they all get their data from traffic sensors embedded in
the pavement.

About the ATT service, will you have to pay for the service after the free
trail runs out? Before I got the Nuvi 1490T I was looking at the Nuvi 1690,
but I read ATT charges around $8-10/month fee for the ATT services which
covers lot more than traffic alone (like having internet access from GPS
like reading news, email, web browsing, and GPS etc..).
And that's the reason why I stopped the research.
P.S. I just checked and it says it offers 2 years free NuLink.
