I've been away from the gps newsgroups for a while, but now, I have a
nagging question. I upgraded from a GPS II+ to a 60CSx a while back, and
added maps this year. Adding maps makes the unit fairly different.
Am about to embark on a bike trip through complex routes where I need
the turn by turn function of "follow roads" route, (complex route in
unfamiliar geography)
I also need ETA capability because of a tight deadline to catch the last
ferry of the day at Cape May which is needed to make the tough decision
to stop cycling and get a bus or hitchhike to reach ferry terminal on time.
However, i noticed that the ETA values when a route has been activated
as "follow roads" seems to be calculated based on the map information,
while the "off road" routing calculates ETA based on current speed.
Anyone know if it is possible to have the "follow road" routing give be
ETA based on remaining distance and actual speed ?
Also, when a route has been activated, is there an easy trick to switch
it between "follow roads" and "off road" modes ? (which would then let
me check ETAs)
To ensure the GPS calculates a road-based route that matches what
RoadTrip displays, I will have a number of waypoints to coax the routing
into what I have decided, so the off-road distances shouldn't be too far
off.

From my experience there is no way to have the 60CSx use your speed to
compute ETA when in the follow road mode.
Very easy to switch between follow road and off road: from a
navigation page (the map page for example) press menu, select
"recalculate" and press enter then check the off road or follow road
depending on which way you want to switch. For this to work you need
to have the system set up to always prompt when calculating a route.
This choice can be found at main menu /system / routing. At the top
there you will find "Guidance Method" --- select "Prompted". That
should do it.
By the way, using many via points (like you mention) is a good idea
to ensure that roads you want to follow are the ones the gps chooses.

WHAT?
I use my 76CSx (same guts as 60) in "follow road" mode all the time. It is
frighteningly accurate
for ETA-- usually within 1 minute. I only switch to off road when in a boat
or airplane.

Traveling by car ? If you change your speed of travel, does the ETA change ?
