Thinking about purchasing a subscription to FM traffic. See Garmin
offering service from 2 different companies, Navtec and Clear Channel.

Looking for comments about either provider. The good, bad, or ugly.

No personal experience. The most common complaint is coverage - people
purchase the FM subscription and then find that it doesn't cover the area
they need. I would recommend against purchasing the lifetime subscription
option, since the lifetime of this technology is probably going to be very
short.

The MSN Direct version, for example, has already announced end of life
for (IIRC) January 2012.

That may have to do more with the fact that it's an overblown and slow
system with poor coverage. Making it something not worth subscribing
to, so people didn't resulting in it not bringing in enough revenue for
Microsoft to continue it. At least they're providing ample notice of
its shut-down.

I tried it earlier in the year. According to their service map, at ~10
miles north-northwest of Portsmouth NH, I am +barely+ within their
coverage area for the metro Boston market. Their maps are optimistic,
I had to travel almost to Danvers MA before the receiver picked up
enough signal to be useful. By their maps, I should have had
sufficient signal by the time I reached Portsmouth.

From past experience with Clearchannel (I think, whatever was included
with the Navigon) I am well within their coverage areas. I never got
it separately after returning the MSN receiver because I realized that
just for traffic, with where and when I go, it would almost never
change the route I take. I had tried the MSN system for its other
capabilities such as sending pre-defined routes to the unit and finding
gas prices.
