I have been looking for some way of setting an accurate elevation on my GPS.
Are there any public places which are commonly marked with an accurate
elevation? I was thinking perhaps bridges, water level under large river
bridges, or perhaps some public buildings? I guess I could always ask a
survey crew if I see one with fancy equipment. Unfortunately I do not live
anywhere near any mountain passes which may be marked with an elevation. Are
there any places which I may have overlooked?
You could always go to the beach. That eleveation should be 'zero'.

The important question is "Where?"
Judging from the timestamp, "In the USA" is a safe guess. So go do
a websearch on "USGS survey benchmark" and marvel that someone has
capriciously spent all your hard-earned tax dollars on something so
trivial as measuring the landscape so you don't have to.

In my case, changing the input to decimal, input of 38.8 122.5 (not neg,
since this is all USA) shows two about four miles away. I selected GPS
only.
DH6285 is a metal disc in the ground, and the datasheet gives instructions
on how to find it. It's right next to the road, so it's pretty easy to
spot.
DK6396 is a CORS gadget, easier to spot. It's about a 12" dome sitting on
a tripod about four feet tall. I haven't stopped to look at exactly where
the "monument" is. It might be on the ground under the tripod, or at the
dome elevation.

How accurate do you need? Google Earth maps give elevation any where on
earth. Contour map I downloaded to MapSource gives elevations.
