When I download the map update and it transfers to my GPS unit, does it
update the Mapsource maps on my computer, too?

Yes ... if you select that option. I didn't when doing my wife's
unit, and now know to look for it. I helped a friend when he bought a
new unit, and paid attention ... it was there.
If you don't have mapsource, there is, AFAIK, little to use them for.
You can get it LEGALLY from Garmin without purchasing it individually,
but it is a tricky around your elbow method.
Good Luck!

Since Garmin has revised their update procedure for numaps, if you
don't click on the "advanced" box, it will only update your GPS. Most
people, as did I, miss it, and have to go back to get the new
Mapsource maps added.

And luckily, you *can* go back and do that. When we missed the Advanced
box, we feared we had lost our chance to get the maps onto the computer,
but Garmin's software was nice to us in this case.
Although we ended up redownloading everything, thus nearly doubling the
total time used. If there's a way to avoid that, we missed it :-)
The second GPS went a lot better, thanks to learning from our experience on
the first.
