I am thinking of switching from a StreetPilot with XMTraffic to a Nuvi
with FM Traffic. I have been pleased, but not thrilled with
XMTraffic. My biggest frustration with XMTraffic is that it doesn't
pick up freeway ramp closures. I've run into numerous problems in
Chicago and St. Louis where freeway ramps are closed for construction
and the unit routes me to that ramp.
In St. Louis - Hanley Road ramp to I-64 W is closed. Traffic.com
accurately shows this. But the traffic on the Garmin (XMTraffic that
uses Traffic.com) does NOT.
Does anyone know if FM TMC traffic picks up this data?
I have a Nuvi 680 with FM TMC and it has never picked up the on-going
construction zones along my daily commute on I-88, I-355, and I-55 in the
Chicago suburbs, though it does pick up traffic delays. I've never come
across a closed ramd so can't comment on that. I only get consistent
coverage within about a 15 mile radius of the transmitter which seems to be
in the Chicago loop.

No, it won't report Construction Zone (I was hoping it does) because the
Traffic Report only report whatever the traffic NEWS reports, and they
usually don't report the same old Construction Zone days/weeks/months after
months, and some even take years to complete.
Yup! before I got the Nuvi 680 I was thinking it would report all those
things, I spent months reading many reviews, joys of the great Nuvi 680 etc.
and most of them just blow the Nuvi 680 bigger than what it really is.
Here, I have traveled with Nuvi 680 up to around 450-500 miles from where
I live, and the only thing I can see it gets updated more often is the
WEATHER (didn't check for Gas or Movie to know for sure). And only ONCE it
reported Traffic Report (car accident) on I-80 some miles passed Omaha
Nebraska.
That is incorrect. As I said in my post, the closure IS reported in
the traffic reports on the unit. The Garmin isn't taking that closure
into account when it calculates its route.

Here are the specifics on the issue in St Louis. I sent this email to
Garmin for a response:
"I am having a reoccurring problem with the routing algorithm on my
2730. It is not taking some traffic conditions into account, despite
those traffic conditions being reported and available on the 2730.
Specifically, the unit is routing me onto interstates using ramps that
are closed. I have confirmed that these ramps are being reported as
closed on the XMTraffic service. In St Louis, MO, the entry to I-64W
from Hanley Rd is closed for long term construction. If you look at
the current traffic being reported on the 2730 through XM Traffic, you
will see that they correctly list the I-64W ramp at Hanley Road as
closed. The exact text is "entry blocked by slip road" (whatever that
means). However, your routing algorithm is not taking this closure
into account. Routinely yesterday, the 2730 tried to route me onto
I-64W at Hanley Road. Why is the routing not taking into account the
closure being reported to the 2730 by XMTraffic?
This has also happened on numerous occasions in Chicago. The 2730
routes me to an interstate, only to find the ramp closed once I get
there. When I search for traffic on the 2730, it correctly shows the
ramp closure in the traffic report.
Please advise."
