Do the Software Engineers Talk to the Hardware Engineers?

Went to do my first C-N NA for US and Canada map update from 2012.10 to
2012.20 and got an error message that there wasn't enough room on my
nuvi to download it. So I had to d/l the smaller file Lower 49 US instead.

Sent off an email to tech support and got a response back that really
didn't address my issue. So I called them and after a moderate wait on
hold, got a really sharp, bright tech guy.

He immediately diagnosed the problem. He said I had to delete off all
kinds of files-- extra languages, help files, JPEGs, MP3s, a a few other
system-type files, etc. to make room. He walked me through doing all
that and then I was able to d/l the US + Canada map files.

I asked him why either the software people didn't write tighter code--
or the hardware folks stick a little more memory in there-- so
everything would fit and customers wouldn't have to go through all that,
especially the first update of a nearly new GPS. For both of us, a big
waste of time...

I thought I heard him rolling his eyes;-)

        Garmin has no talking policy. Garmin has pretty good GPS production, but
because they are more interest in making more of cheaper models to collect
more $$$$. Lets see

1. Garmin has a lousy and most stupid software I have ever seen. It's bad
enough that many if most people don't like to use their online updating (Web
Updater for example). Until they have no other choice

2. Look at the cradle of newer models. They are getting lesser plastic, and
no power connection (from cradle)

3. Even the memory is dirt cheap these days, the internal memory is barely
large enough to hold the Map Data. Many people having "not enough memory"
error when trying to upgrade the map.

        I believe depending on the model the internal memory is somewhere around
1.5xG - 1.9xG.

4. I just tried to install MapSource to my system and end up 3 versions of
MapSource on 3 different locations (2 different drives). I also trying to
transfer the City Navigator to external memory card (using memory card
reader), not only that the newer MapSource works differently than the older
version. It saved the .IMG to MAP instead of Garmin folder.

        The external memory card also has a hidden .System folder that I don't
remember if I did copy the original map from internal memory to it or not.

        IOW, Garmin just try to save few pennies and they don't realize that they
have caused way too much problem to the consumers.
