Just bought a data programmer and a card for my GPSMAP 392. Just out of
curiosity, is there any way to read the files that are on the card, as
opposed to just using the transfer functions within Mapsource. Just curious
to see exactly what gets out on the card when i transfer my waypoints,
tracks, and maps.

The Data Card Programmer shows up in the Device Manager as a device in
the Garmin USB Device category. And MapSource looks for and finds that
device.

You can use MapSource's Transfer menu to get the data on the card into
MapSource and see the data in the user data tabs. And from there you
can save it to the PC as a *.gdb or *.gpx file.

If the 392 has an option to save the user data that is in the GPS memory
to a data card you can probably do a transfer and see the data in
MapSource. But do that carefully, you should use a blank data card to
transfer the data to, if you transfer it to one of the cards that is
preloaded with mapping, you might overwrite the card and lose your
mapping. I don't think there is any way to write protect a data card.

But as far as I know there is not application that will display the
Garmin Data Card as a removable drive and show it from Windows Explorer
in the same manner that other Garmin GPS receivers do in the Computer
Connected or Mass Storage modes.

That is a discontinued product and the Garmin Data Cards are no longer
in production or being used any newer Garmin hardware. As it happened,
that card evolved into a very limiting and expensive form of external
memory in comparison to the Garmins that use SD and microSD cards. The
largest card made was 512 MB and that was selling for around $200 last
time I noticed them. And the 512 MB cards were not compatible with all
models that used the data cards, check compatibility with your before
you buy.

Yes there is. Download GPSExplorer at:
http://www.geocities.com/garminmaploader/

You'll also have to get the Java runtime package.

It won't download with the reader because it only recognizes serial
ports. You'll have to download the data from the GPS, with the data
card in it of course.

Of course, use the RS-232 serial port on the GPS receiver. Like going
in the back door.

Thanks for the tip on that, Rick.
