Hopefully this will be a very short thread about data fields on the map
page.
On my 76s, I can set both the # and size of fields.
Currently it is set at 3 fields across in each of 2 rows.
Size is set to small

speed dist to next time to next
altitude dist to dest time to dest

Then there is a full screen window that displays the next street, exit, etc.
whether I am navigating or not.
On my 76csx, there is no page layout option and I seem only to be able to
get 2 field across, rather than 3.
Most distressing is that I cannot adjust the size of the fields, as I could
with the 76s.
So now, with only 4 fields showing, the actual map fills only about 40% of
the screen.
Is there any way of changing this. I can't find anything in the map page
section of the Garmin manual.
Could the fact that I do not as yet have any supplemental maps in it be a
factor?
Thanks!!

I think that it is only with the small size that allows you to have
three data fields across. The small size option went away with either
the CS model or the CSx model.

With the newer ones the size went away and as you say, you can up two
rows of and either one or two data fields per row. I use the Map page,
Highway page, Computer page, and Route page to display different data
fields. The Turn Preview and Active Route pages also have user
configurable data boxes so those add some options for display other data
when a route is active. So I sometimes will Page or Quit forward and
backward through the pages to see a specific data field.

I generally don't use any data fields on the Map page in order to get
the most area for display of map details. This is particularly so when
I using marine charts and in crowded or narrow passages. At those times
I want to see the magenta route line, the sounding immediately around
me, and little else.

That sounds like the Turn Preview page. That only appears when you have
an active route. A Guidance Text "banner" with the next destination
appears on the top of the Map page when you activate a route. The
display of that can be turned on or off from the Guidance Text setting
when you press Menu on the Map page.

The Active Route and Turn Preview pages are only seen, (1) if you have
them turned on for display, and, (2) when you have a route active.

The display on the Active Route page is different for Follow Road and
Off Road routes. For the first it is a list of the maneuvers, for Off
Road it is the waypoint list with the active waypoint blinking.

Two files across is the max now. I don't find that limiting though.
There are about 40 different choices for data that can be displayed and
I disperse the ones of those that I want to use around on the different
pages and can alway find a data element I want quickly on one page or
the other.

I think two fields are about optimal as far as the data and the data
label being legible. I think a little use will salve your distress.
:>) I never had one with the choice of three across so I don't miss it.

Page and Quit, Page and Quit. Once the habit of moving back and forth
through the pages becomes more familiar, and seeing different data
elements on the different pages, it will settle down for you.

Here is the settings I have on mine and they seem pretty logical as far
as the pages that I have chosen to display, the sequence of their
display, and the data fields on the pages. It will not be the choices
of everyone but it is a good starting point. If you download this text
file and set your setting the same as that, you'll get a good feel for
all of the setting and preferences on the 76Cx and what has worked well
for me in using it on the road (to get to a boat and pick it up) and on
the water (to deliver the boat to an owner or a marina for storage).

Dispersing the data elements around a little maybe two on the map page,
four on the highway page, some on the computer, active route, and turn
preview pages will do it.

No, that does not change anything as far as the data boxes and stuff.

I really found the 76Cx to be a bit of a mess as I received it. All
those damn pages, many I did not use or want, the obscure settings that
should have been on but were not, etc., etc. It took me a while to get
the 76Cx tuned in and for me to consider it as better than the Magellan
Meridian that had been the backbone of my handheld navigation process.

And that text file above is the thing that let me deal with the
complexity of all the settings. One thing I learned the hard way was
that I do not *ever* want to use the Set to Defaults option from any
page or at any time. That put me back to a new out of the box
configuration one time at a time and place (in a boat) where it was very
distressing and difficult to recover from.

I make three or four changes when I shift from highway to marine use, I
am prompted at every route activation, all my track data is saved all
the time, and that is the way it has to be for me to stay on track.

Good luck with it, you'll come to love it!

Too bad! Driving is what I use it for 80% of the time.
It is really handy not to have to reach for buttons whilst keeping an eye on
the road.
The 76s merely had an "approaching turn" popup when a waypoint was looming.
It was very handy to be able to watch it count down in meters at the same
time as you had a visual on your position.
I know I could recreate that with the csx, which is what I will probably do

Again...too bad!

Having a street name appear while driving is another rerassurance that all
is well, especially in a situation where I am in another car, not driving,
and our written directions are, say "1st left after Smith street."
