I currently have City Navigator North America, which I bought back in
2006 I think. However there's nothing on the box that indicates it's
"City Navigator North America 2006" let alone whether it's NT. I
noticed that Update 2009 for City Navigator North America NT is
available on Amazon for about $50, but there isn't any listing for City
Navigator North America NT 2009, and the listing on the Garmin site
doesn't have an associated year either.
So I can't figure out what's going on. Do I buy the "update 2009" if I
already have purchased and loaded the maps, and does my 60Cx use NT?
Does Garmin know that their map product names are so confusing? At
least back in the old days they have version numbers.

Apparently what I had associated with my 60Cx was the "non-NT" version 8
City Navigator NA maps. I'm not sure why I would have bought those back
in '06 since the 60Cx was compatible with NT, but I was probably
confused back then as well. It took me two separate calls to technical
support to sort out what's going on.
Apparently I can use the update to 2009, but after that I won't be able
to update to later years because they'll only produce NT (new
technology) versions of the map updates. So I have to buy CN NA NT on
the DVD, and once I do that I'll get a free update to 2010 NT.
I also discovered that buying more memory won't necessarily allow me to
load more map data, because there's a maximum limit of 2000 map segments
no matter how much memory I have (currently 2 GB) and the Topo Maps use
about 7000 map segments. However, I suppose I could also load other CN
maps, like Mexico and Europe, since CN tends to use only a few map
segments so the memory capacity is more relevant there.
But the other problem is that Garmin seems to have discovered a business
model where they can sort of compel people to buy whole new product
lines, and the maps can now be associated only with one device. (That
may not be the best business model for them, because it dissuades people
from buying more than 1 hardware device, but I guess they plan to make
most of their money on software and updates from now on.)
BTW, the first tech person I talked to thought that I'd be able to use
the 2009 NT update even though my current maps are non-NT. So even
their own tech people are a little confused. Can't really blame them.
