I wouldn't say the Vista HCx has a generic copy of the SiRF III.
The Vista HCx uses a chipset made by MediaTek not SiRF. I
have found the MediaTek chipset inferior to the SiRF III
but it is good enough for most users.

By stability I think they mean it tracks satellites well without going
out of lock/view/whatever all the time, especially under adverse
conditions, like under tress in the woods. That's why you want a sirf
3 chipset - acquires satellites very well and tracks like glue (you
know what I mean) under all conditions better than anything else.
