Since 24K maps are now available in my area (CO/UT/NV) I was thinking
about getting a Colo400t gps unit. It comes with (I believe) 100K
mapping.
1. Since I would buy the 24K maps ($99 each?? whew!) and since I
already have a good set of BLM and USFS maps, wouldn't it be better to
buy the 400?
2. Will the 400 series hold more than one 24K map, or would I need to
carry the MicroSD chips around and load them into the gps as I change
areas?
3. I'd be nice if I could use the 24K maps on my PC, but Garmin says
the MicroSDs cannot download to a PC. Are there any alternatives? 4. I
don't really care about all the on-road stuff, I would just use the
gps for off-roading in Colo/Utah/Nevada.
4. Will the Colo 400 function well inside a truck cab or would I need
an external antenna?
I'm just starting out with this gps technology and would appreciate
any suggestions you might want to offer.

Do you mean the 300? The 300 has a very primitive basemap. Probably
depends on how much you want to use it outside the area covered by
your 24k maps. If not much, then go with the 300.

Only one at a time, since you need to swap cards and the OR only has
one slot.

There are online topo maps servers available (ie. topozone.com) and
other PC based programs. TopoFusion and ExpertGPS are both good
tools.

I'm guessing it would be fine w/o and antenna (it works fine inside
the house/building).
Stop by http://gpsfix.net or http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com if you

Maybe not legal, but it is possible. Just read my last few posts in
the group for the answer.

Usually all modern receivers provide good results as long as they are
close to the windshield.
