I have never using any upgrade version to upgrade my older map so I don't
have any experience. I don't have 100% trust to Garmin, not ready to
upgrade yet, and always try to gather as much information as possible before
doing it. So my question

1. Is there any difference between regular and upgrade version? I mean the
installation, and requirement (like older version already installed)

2. Can the upgrade version be installed on HARD DRIVE instead of directly to
the GPS unit?

3. If it requires to install to the GPS, then can it be installed to
External Memory Card instead of the Internal Memory (the GPS itself)?. I am
worrying if the installation may get screwed up and lose the original MAP.

4. Does the installation requires Internet Connection? I remember some does
and some doesn't, and wondering what happen to people who don't have
internet? This just popped in my mind ..

5. Hmmm of course I won't upgrade any newer map to my older Garmin GPSes
those either don't have external memory, and the internal is too small (like
16-64M). But because of the messy Garmin marketing, I wonder if I have to
be specific which GPS I will upgrade when ordering the upgrade version, or I
can just upgrade to any (not all but any) of the Garmin I have?

Oh man, I am thinking I may be in trouble .. because I always want to find
thing out myself, and something just pop in my mind... about the upgrading
and safety.

Yes, I have ready backup the 2008 map from my Nuvi 668 to hard drive, now
I wonder if I screw up the upgrading .. can I just copying the backup back
to Nuvi (I mean without going through the installation). I have too many
question, and I guess I may Google for more answer while waiting for answer
here.

TIA

I spent about an hour Google for Updating information but I only found
BitTorrent where to download City Navigator 2009

And while searching, I realize that *if* it won't allow to install on
external memory using memory card reader then I read many report saying that
it's dog slow to install to internal memory. Then I read many people
installed to external memory using card reader ... but I don't remember
reading "upgrading".

Few weeks (or months?) ago I tried to install Garmin Topo 2008 on external
memory using card reader and it worked fine, but it wasn't updating so it's
another story.

You're better of installaing it on the external memory card if
time/downloading is a concern for you. Downloading to your Nuvi or GPS
is rather tricky. In fact, you probably wont be able to unlock CN if
you try to download to your GPS. In any case, you have to delete your
existing .img file on the gps and the download will take more than 60+
minutes via Mapsource. I recommend d/l to your SD card.

I'll take a stab at answering some of your questions.

> 1. Is there any difference between regular and upgrade version? I mean

Map content is the same. Upgrade must find a pre-existing installation of
the same map series (like City Navigator) or it will not install.

> to
> the GPS unit?

Yes. The upgrade typically installs the maps first to the PC and then, if
connected, automatically installs to the GPS.

Theoretically, once installed on a PC, you can select any map chunks for
installation to another media (GPS, SD card, or other media). IMHO, not a
good idea.... if you're updating, let it update the GPS internal memory. It
will erase the original map (no way around that!) and replace it with the
new map. If the unit has a basemap, that map is never overwritten.

Yes, an Internet connection is required, at least for CNNA. My
understanding is that the installation checks the Garmin database to make
sure the product code has not been used before. I don't know if there's a
workaround... perhaps someone else knows.

The upgrade is specific to the Garmin unit that was unlocked for that
product before. Only that unit can be updated unless you have purchased
additional unlock codes.

I don't know about backing up your Nuvi and restoring it without
"installing".

Another note about Nuvis...

Updating the maps does NOT delete the original maps that the Nuvi came with
(I consider this a problem) but it is nice to know you can always revert
back by selecting the original version from the "Maps" menu under "Map
info".

I am very disappointed with the latest NZ updates - the POIs are awful!
Fuel stations in the wrong place, etc! I have gone back to 2006 version 2
and use third-party POIs instead.
