I just got this a few days ago.
I have another Garmin (60CS)
I can download the waypoints from the GPS to mapsource, but I can't
create a route in mapsource and send it to the GPS.
Even if I were able to make a string of via points -- I am unable to
save the route to the GPS.
All I want to do is get off the highway an exit early and avoid a
bunch of aweful turns.
If the routes are making it into the GPS, I sure can't find them -- so
I can drive them.
Have you checked Tools -> My Data -> Import Route From File?

Does the 265T actually support "routes" ?

No, it doesn't. You need a 14**,5**,7**, or 8** series Nuvi to do "routes".

I have worked with Garmin GPS receivers since the mid 90's starting
with the GPS 12, GPS 12XL, eTrex, GPS 76, GPS 76Cx. When the Garmin
Nuvi models first came out I was very disappointed that some of the
features I took to be standard GPS features were missing. Such as
uploading a route or recording a track log. :(
