I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 with Service
Pack 2. I'm trying to install the USB drivers to connect my C330. I
launched the application USB_Drivers.exe on the CD that Garmin
provided, accepted the license agreement, and connected the C330 to
the PC by a USB cable. Before I could click next, Window's Found New
Hardware Dialogue appeared.

Ignoring the Found New Hardware Dialogue, I clicked next on the
USB_Drivers.exe application. The application responded with a notice
that I had to turn the GSP's power on and connect it to the PC before
I could continue. This is as far as this could go.

Trying to use the Found New Hardware, I chose to install the software
automatically. The Wizard provides a prompts asking me for the file
'grmnusb.sys' on [Unknown]. Seeing that the file exists on the CD
that Garmin provided, I point to the CD. The Wizard the informs me
that it cannot install this hardware. Message includes a note that
says that there was a problem installing this hardware: Garmin USB
GPS. An error occurred during the installation of the device. The
system cannot find the file specified. Click Finish to close. When I
click Finish, Windows launches the Found New Hardware Wizard all over
again. Endless cycle.

Please help!! And thanks in advance.

Mark

Hi.

1. Don't connect Garmin device to PC before running drivers install.
2. Download new drivers http://www.garmin.com/software/USBDrivers_221.exe
3. For manual install use that http://garmin.com.ua/files/GarminUSB221.zip -
point Windows to folder with unpacked files.

PS: There is a BUG: Users with non-latin symbols in their windows-name will
see this dialog box:

---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
Failed to run .\Autorun.exe (check to see if this file is in the EXE)
---------------------------
??
---------------------------

so they need to use method #3.

Sounds like the driver install was not completed.

It would make more sense to download the most recent version of the USB
Drivers (Ver. 2.2.1 as of Mar 26, 2007), you can download it from your
GPS receiver's software update page:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downloadsUpdates.jsp?product=010-00401-10

Save the download to the desktop. Unplug the GPS from the computer.
Double click the downloaded *.exe file and it will unzip some files to a
folder off the root (c:\garmin\usb drivers typically) and put some files
in it (including the *.sys file you mention).

Nothing very apparent will happen. The drivers are not actually
installed yet, you have only put the drivers in a folder so that they
can be installed in the next step.

Plug your GPS in, turn it on, and when the New Hardware Wizard runs let
it search for the folder with the drivers. If it does not find the
folder mentioned above, back up one step and use browse lead it to that
folder. It should then complete the process and you should then be able
to see the GPS from MapSource.

If that process fails, go to the Device Manager and look for any devices
with a yellow question mark on. Those might be from failed attempts at
installing the driver. Uninstall all items with yellow questions marks.

Then restart the computer, if you have some other uninstalled hardware
on your system that was the cause of the yellow question marks, the New
Hardware Wizard will try to resolve those when you do the startup.
Otherwise you are ready to plug the GPS in and turn it on.
