I'm wondering if the Garmin Nuvi 250 street mapper GPS unit an also be
used for hiking? Will it let you do waypoints and display longitude and
lattitude, etc.?

Or is it really only for in vehicle use?

TLS-

A fully charged Nuvi 350 will run for several hours on its internal
battery. Maybe not enough for a hike, but it will certainly operate
outside a vehicle. There may be a way to rig-up an external battery
pack to a USB connection or hub, and keep it going longer.

It is possible to enter "points of interest", one at a time. They can
be entered by address, by coordinates or by being there and saving your
current location. There may be software that can create POIs on your
computer, but I'm not familiar with it. I've looked at the POI file
with a text editor, and believe you can add them that way as well.

The map shows minimal detail "in the wild". I don't know if off-road
maps are available.

You can display longitude and latitude in degrees and decimal minutes.
It provides altitude, but don't trust it. Right now mine says I'm 62
feet below sea level!

Garmin TV adverts in UK are centred round the use of the Nuvi as both a
hand-held and in-car navigator
