Can GPS purchased from USA be used in India

I am from New Delhi, India.

I am purchasing Garmin eTrex Vista HCx from Amazon dot com. It will be
delivered to my friends address in USA.
Then I'll get it from him when he comes back to India.

Reason for purchasing GPS from Amazon was the discount of 99$ (USD). I
just have to shell $210 i.e. Rs.10,000 (INR) for the unit.


Now the question is - Can I use the unit as it is purchased from USA
not India ? Actually I am said that device purchased from USA are
useless in India as they are locked for America region.

Is it true ?
Is there any other way to use this unit in India even after paying for
the legal Indian maps to Garmin ????

If Garmin sells a mapping product for India it will work on it. And if
you can find Garmin compatible third party mapping that will work too.

I bought my Vista in USA as well and it works perfect in Europe. The basemap
is pretty useless. It will only show up when you zoom-out quite a lot. And
there are (free) alternatives.
