Had my C340 for almost two years... Map database is getting long in the
tooth.

What source do you recommend for an updated map database? I want to
keep my "favorites" ad "recent" items.

I don't think you have a choice other than Garmin. I've the C330,
about 4 years old, and have updated it once. I don't remember if I
lost my "recent" items. I backup my favorites to my PC to use in
another unit as well, so losing those wouldn't bother me; I know of no
way to backup "recent selections".

The DVD is available from various sources; Costco.com often has it.
They show it at $54.99 but seem to be out. Darrel at the online firm
tvnav.com appears to have it for $60.

There is a new "perpetual" subscription, but I've not looked at it.

1- I did a free update last summer (voices only). I recall that: To save
recent places before I did the update, I sifted through "recents" and
picked those I should want again and copied them into the "favorites"
bin, then I did the update.

2- I googled C340 updates, got some boring reading materialsandendedupon
whatmayhavebeen the Garmin site... not sure.

3- I did the freebies first, looked like the same (or further updated)
voice files.. English and italian. That took about a half-hour of
elapsed time.

4- The one $eriou$ map update offer was from websales@garmin.com, for
$69.99. Since I now use my C340 for client appointments all over Ohio, I
decided to spring for it. It took 8 hours overnight to download the two
Gigs of map data, and another hour this morning to install. Not a lark.

5- Checked the one pesky freeway intersecton (North 71/270 split) that
was overhauled a year ago, and found it to be proper now.

6- I checked my Faorites and Recents to find them all present and
unaltered (so special backup now not mandatory). But I honor the old
Pennsylvania Dutch Carpeters' Creed: "Measure Twice. Cut Once".

7- I'd have to spend more time rooting through the Internet to do that.
The 2 gig file is now on my HD, and it soon will be backed up.

8- Likely that a vew unit may occur for the next Biennual update....
