My C340, both with old and new maps, voice Jill often announces "A
bettter route is available". Rarely can I imagine where it expects to go
because at that position which is often about 2/3rds of the way to my
destination, there is no other way to go. Besides it chose that route
itself. This has been happening for the "Shortest" choice, but I can't
say for sure that it woud not also happen on the "Fastest" choice.
I just recently updated the software and the voices, and bought and
installed the latest map database.
Any comments?

I don't have C340 to knhow much about it, but I agree with you on the
"shortest" which often not the shortest or the best route.
I have noticed my Nuvi 680 often chose the STRAIGHT route, then later end
up in 25 MPH residential. So it's useful on strange place, but you can see
how stupid it's on the area you know so well.
