There seem to be a lot of good deals on the nuvi 660 on eBay and
elsewhere. This seemed to be a highly rated unit when new. But on a
more general note what is the downside of buying an older (but new as
in unused) unit?

If you're planning on getting updated maps for it, the cost of the used unit
plus the map update probably won't be all that much less than a new one.
Plus buying used electronics is always somewhat of a crap shoot.

Unless you're really strapped for cash, I'd pop for a new one-- maybe a
model that's jus been superseded. They're usually on sale at pretty low
prices. The big electric websites (Newegg, etc.) often have them for around
$100.

If the unit is NIB on eBay, it should be eligible for a free map update.
This is assuming that it's never locked on to a satellite previously.

At one time Garmin was being a little fussy about eBay sellers with
regard to warrantees and map updates. Better check that it's a
legitimate Garmin dealer if you want to get the map update.
