Irma-

As I recall, my Nuvi 350 worked right out of the box, other than needing
its battery charged.

I don't think professional help is needed, although navigating through
the various menus can be confusing until you get used to it. There are
default preferences that can be changed, but it works as-is. You may
want to tell it where "Home" is.

The first time mine was turned on, it took quite a while to find out
which GPS satellites were within range. You may need to give it some
initial information until it can download data from one of the
satellites.

I bought a Nuvi 200w a couple of weeks ago, took it out, and used it to
find my way to another store in walk mode. There was about 45 minutes of
battery life out of the box.

I believe *all* current GPSes should work rigtht out of the box, and I
dunno what kind of special "set up" Best Buy offers you free there.

I dołnt think you wanna spend much time on few local asking thing I
haven't known, hearing thing they dołnt know much about it. Or since you
already have Internet then I would suggest to learn to take advantage of
GOOGLE.

And you may wanna check online store which may save you few hundreds of
$$$, Googling around you may find either cheaper store or onsale which save
you even more. In general, GPS, camera, camcorder etc. you may be able to
save $200-500 from buying online instead of local.

I have just purchased the c550 for my wife and love it. She loves it!

As the owner of an eTrex, eTrex advanced model (??), eMap, Streetpilot III,
Streetpilot 2610 (defective from first year) the c550 blows them all away
with it's polished menus, ease of use, clear language and Bluetooth phone
hookups. The price was less than 25% of what I paid for the StreetPilots.

Having seconf thoughts? My wife was always annoyed with my high-tech gadgets
until she has 100 miles to travel on a densely fogged trip home. Without the
SP III she would have parked the car and froze for the night. After hours of
travel in crap conditions she told me if it broke she would buy another
tomorrow. Shopping, finding fuel, your way home, a place to stay, cruising
through places you would never go before? Love it. get it! Save fuel not
gettinbg lost and screaming at your navigator. Save your marriage.

I don't have the c550, but I do have the c530 which I think is the same without
the "frills" (no music, spoken street names nor bluetooth). I have found it
very easy to use, but I am a old computer professional. My wife can use it for
navigating, but for setting up "waypoints" in advance I have to do the job.
Again, I find it relatively easy, but that's the sort of thing I do.

The only setting up that was needed involved getting a DVD with Map Source and
the initial maps, to install in the computer. The unit arrived with the maps
installed in the internal memory and I had to call Garmin for the PC installable
copy. They actually sent me a custom-burned disc (blank, with hand-written
description on the other-wise plain sleeve and on the disc)! Since then I've
always bought new maps and updates on discs, not on preloaded SD cards. (See
"Can you copy NT files from an SD Preprogramed card to a blank SD card?"
thread.)

I really like the c530, and see no need for the extras that the other c500
series have, but the c530 has been discontinued, and the prices on the c550 seem
very low right now (I suspect it is headed for obsolescence shortly).
