Which is the best UK map that I can load onto my gps 60CSX for hiking
please? Topo GB looks fine on Mapsource, but on the gps it shows no
roads, though it does have contours. Perhaps it is my set up, if so can
someone please put me straight?

Good question! Let's hope you get it answered.
I thought I might add one myself and perhaps someone knowledgeable can help
us both out in the same response.

If one loads a topo map, does, or can, it get overlaid one an existing
street map.
e.g. having a lake & rivers maps on top of CNNA .
Or are we stuck with the same only gmapsupp.img file.
I do have a fleeting acquaintance with the IMG2GPS program, but I was
wondering if there might be interference between 2 maps covering the same
territory, albeit they are dealing with different things.

I will try to answer both questions.

Topo GB does include roads and also some tracks and footpaths that are not
shown on City Navigator Europe. (It does not show all rights of way.) The
roads should be shown on the 60CSx. The amount of detail shown on 60CSx will
depend on both the map setup and the zoom level. If you have already bought
Topo GB, then give it more of a chance before spending money on something
else. I wonder if you were simply looking at an area with no roads.

Using MapSource you can select segments (or tiles) of more than one type of
map and then transfer your selections to the 60CSx's memory card. I usually
have both CNE and Topo GB on my card. Both map series are then included in
the same .img file. You can select which maps should be displayed, using map
setup. (If in doubt press menu again.) You will still only see one map
series at a time.

I have heard that it is possible to create 'transparent' maps, for example
to overlay contours on top of road maps, but this is definitely not provided
in the Garmin commercial offerings.

Thanks, Mark!
What about combining CNNA with, say, Canada Lakes & Rivers.
Would they not be covering such different "areas" as to co-exist peacefully?

I usually make all my maps transparent with one of a few different "hacker"
utilities out there. (Depending on whichever one I happen to remember has
that option at the time I need it.) This way no matter which one you enable
on the GPS device itself, its data will show through them all. When
compiling your GPS map data from MapSource (selecting map tiles and send to
device), you can select as many tiles as you want from as many different
map sets as you want (up to the built in limit of 2025 tiles). Then when
using the resulting gmapsupp.img file on your GPS, you go to Setup Menu,
Map, then cursor over to the little "i" icon. Now press your menu button
and it will present you with a list of all the different map-sets that you
selected map tiles from. For example, for my area, I compiled a
gmapsupp.img file from 16 different mapsets. This includes Garmin's Topo
2008, a higher resolution topo from GPSFileDepot, a lake depth map-set that
I created myself from all available government data, a section of the Blue
Chart series for my area, a fishing hotspots from Garmin, City Navigator
2010, some of Topo Canada, my area's snowmobile trails, and all the high
resolution maps of Garmin's National Park series, two sets of Range &
Township maps for my state that I compiled from government resources (handy
for hunters and hikers to know if you are on public lands or not), plus
more.

As I need to use each one I merely select if it is being hidden, or shown,
on the map setup menu. If I need automated routing or the ability to find
commercial waypoints, then I turn on the City Navigator one. When not
needed then I turn that one off and let the high resolution topo maps from
GPSFileDepot take over. Overlain with my own compilation of 1150 lake-depth
maps.

The ONLY problem when doing this is it can get confusing which map-set you
are using and how accurately it is depicting the roads you are using.
Enabling two or more maps can have two or three parallel roads which are
all the same one. Just because the data in one map-set might be offset by
20-50 feet from another map-set. This is true for commercial maps as well
as any free ones. None are 100% accurate.
