I have a new GPSMAP 60CSx and I have the feeling am doing something
wrong. This is just the basic unit with no additional mapping
software. I am using it for driving.

The map does not give me a route, but a straight line "as the crow
flies." It is as if it thinks I am on open water.

The compass instructions are vague and ambiguous. They do seem to
notice streets but w-hen I come to a cross street it might point at a
45-degree angle as if saying "half turn." Frequently when I follow
these vague instructions it will take me to a dead end and insists I
should take the car off the road and go across country.

I may not have the settings correct. Am I missing something? Does it
need to get a map chip?

I don't think it will do turn-by-turn routing on the base map, i.e.
without a map product (e.g. City Select) download.

Even then, the software is way behind the hardware on this unit.

It's supposed to:

"Includes a built-in Americas autoroute basemap with automatic
routing capabilities, including highways, exits, and tide data (U.S.
only)"

http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap60csx/

City Select is no longer current, having been replaced by City
Navigator.

Look at the "Routing Setup" page and be sure that "Guidance Method"
is set to "Follow Road".

Thank you. That brings me a step closer.

Guidence Method seems to have one option: off-road. If I hit menu it
gives me only "restore defaults." Is the problem that I need to
purchase a detail map? And if so where do I do that? Is there just
one or do I have multiple maps?

Sorry if I sound like a clueless newbie, but that is pretty much what I
am.
