I'm attracted to the Nuvi 500 cross over features for
use in car, bicycling, hiking, etc.
Does anyone have and can verify it works well?

I have one and was attracted because it is waterproof, Routes can be
uploaded from MapSource, it record tracks and a bicycle mount is
available. I wanted to move up from a Quest. The one feature that I
want and is faulty in the NUVI 500 is elevation accuracy. There is a
window for elevation on the compass page, but elevation varies +-100
feet in a very short distance. Other than that I love the 500. In 3D
mode the streets display are double lines. On a bicycle this is great,
The Quest give this view when making a turn on a route.
I had Garmin repair my Quest and is using the Quest for the bicycle
now and the 500 for the car I have a bike log that uses altitude gain,
speed and distance for calories count. My NUVI 500 page covers my
findings. http://www.billcotton.com/nuvi500.htm The bike log is
elsewhere on my web.

Thanks Mac!!
Sounds like the 500 is the one I should get then!
I only take long road trips once/twice a year..... so a
GPS that I can use for driving as well as bicycling and
hiking would be a better "value" for me.... I think.
You agree, yes?

Yes. I have and will ues the 500 for my car trips. The route planning
on the computer map allow you to insert side trips or use known roads
instead of those picked by the gps. The computer map has a "rubberband
feature that allows you to click on the route line and move it to
another road and the route will uses that road.
But it you want just put the two addresses in the gps and go with it.
