If you are inte US visit this site that has free Topo-maps of most states.

They also have explanations of how to get the maps onto your device.

So it means that it is possible to put any maps on my device, not only
roads?

I'm living in South Tyrol, it's in the Dolomiti Mountains, north of Italy+
south of Austria.

Yes as others have said, it is possible.

I see on http://www.garmin.it/cartografia_topografica.htm
that there is a trek map that covers at least part of the Dolomiti
Mountains.

This covers te whole area I'm interested in. It's availabel only on the
international version of the website...
There's a trial-version for download too.. so I'm gonna try if it works on
the 1490T.
I'm a bit confused because my device is not in the compatibility-list... and
I don't understand why.
