Hi! Finally I got the 1490T. Now I'd like to add some maps, but not
streets... I'd like to install some trekking maps, for walking in the
mountains... Is it possible?
Do I have to get them from Garmin or can I buy from other producers too?
Which product can i buy and how does it work?
thanx

Before you spend any money installing maps onto the 1490, I would advise you
to consider getting a different unit to use for trekking. The Nuvi range,
particularly the 1490, are specifically designed for use in a vehicle and are
really quite unsuitable for outdoor use.
Garmin produce a number of handheld models which are far more suitable for
that sort of thing. See https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145

It would be a 90% for car, and 10% outdoor when I need to locate myself, and
the right path ..
:P
I'm conscious that I will need a good bag for the 1490, and avoid water..
but in some emergencies it would be great to be able to use it.. I don't do
anything extreme, no free-climbing or something like that, just walking like
a tourist :) and I would be very happy if i could add some trekking routes

The trick is less about the maps or the physical protection than the
Nüvi's internal battery doesn't last very long for what a lot of people
think is "outdoor use", and it's not like you can swap it for a fresh
set of AAs from your pocket. A couple of hours is about all you can
really rely on it for. You can stretch that by only turning it on every
20 minutes or so when you need to get a fix, but while that'll get you
back to the trailhead eventually, it's not a GPS experience that a lot
of people are looking for.

I'm never been sure about what "might" be available for outdoor mapping...
Most of the USA Topo maps are merely that - digitized versions of the paper
maps.
Not sure what's avail in Europe; - Italy, Austria, etc -
The USA maps show the topo lines, and general geographic land....
woods, flats, streams, railroad, towers, power lines, buildings, etc
but have never seen anything that shows the "trails",
or something to follow on a trek.
