Very timely note, Gene--you may enjoy this comic:

Thanks. Actually, that's been a pet peeve of mine since I moved to
California in 1967. It seems that people here have the same habit as in the
cartoon. Unfortunately, I never thought of the solution given there :-)

For me the worst part of it is that I am pretty hopeless at following
spoken directions, whereas I can often look at a map for a few seconds and
follow a pretty complicated route without looking again.

I remember things like going through the same routine as in the cartoon,
asking the person to just give me the address, rinse and repeat forever...
Finally, he says, "and that will put you at 23 Second Street in San Jose",
and I reply, "Oh, what a coincidence - that's just two houses from my
friend Debra" (address and name made up). Geez...

Ah, that's because you are Gene and not Jean!

Mike (not Michaela, but without the eidetic memory).

Are you sure I'm not Gene as in Gene Tierney?

I have known men with no X and women with an excellent X, where X can stand
for "sense of direction", "ability to read maps", and more...

Also vice versa, of course.

I had a high school gym coach named Frank Tierney. Maybe you two are
related.

:-)
