And I recognize that this is probably operator error.
I got the 255W to give to wife who is non-tech and getting lost.
1. I cannot get it to fully charge. Manual says let it discharge
fully. How does one do that. As an aside - I let it sit "off" on the
desk overnight. Though it would tell me it was a GARMIN, that was as
far as I could get it to go when turned on this morning.
2. It doesn't know where it is. "Home" comes out a different address,
when I use "Where Am I" Walking around the area does not get me to
my address. When I type in my address and check it standing in my
driveway, it tells me I'm 100' W of home. Have not tried to go
anywhere with it yet.
3. Now recharging since 0800 on UBS. Will try to relocate home about
1600. Tech support says go to on spot and turn it on, and leave it
for 10-15 minutes and see if it gets a better fix on itself. I can
shoot and plot a sunline faster than that.
4. Perhaps this technology is not for me.
HELP!!!!

1. Discharging the unit fully is used to recalibrating the 'fuel
gauge' battery icon. It has very little to do with getting the
battery itself to accept a full charge. You would do this by removing
all external power, turning the unit on and letting it run until it
shuts off.

2. The problem with knowing where "Home" is and displaying the wrong
address is common. It seems to be a fault of the folks who supply the
map to Garmin. My 750 can store a set of coordinates instead of a
street address for home. Look in your manual to see if yours will do
this and set it up without using a street address. It will still show
your address wrong if you look at "Where Am I" but the home icon
should be in the proper place on the map.

3. It should only take about 3 to 4 hours to fully recharge the
battery. Make sure that the unit is charging by looking for the
battery 'fuel gauge' icon. If it shows on the main screen, then you
are NOT charging the battery. It should disappear when external power
is applied. I might also add that the battery life will only be 3 to
4 hours with a fully charged battery. The unit isn't intended for use
off of the cradle.

Just jumping in here, something that always confused me about this process
is the (apparent) lack of something commonplace in electronics: an
indication during the charging process that you're done. Nowhere can I
find any kind of reference indicating that the 255W is supposed to
display "CHARGE COMPLETE" when the battery is topped off ... so I assume
it simply doesn't. Mine certainly doesn't, although the battery definitely
charges.

Neither my 750 or my Palm indicate when the charge is complete but my
Olympus camera's charger does. All three use Li-Ion battery
technology, go figure.

But my 350 does tell me "Charge complete" when using charger comes with
the unit. However, I can't sure about using the USB cable because I
never use it to charge the 350.
