I got such super help here back when I first got the unit, I'm back with a
"problem" that I don't know what to set to fix it.

I draw up a route on the computer, and run it over to the handheld unit.

I select a particular route on the unit and have it work out the navigation.

Yesterday (not the first time), I was riding through the country to get to
my destination, and the unit had made a different selection of roads and
turns (Off Road is turned off) I was supposed to follow.

Well, I don't know if I would have eventually ended up correctly or not, but
because I didn't want to get caught on some road I didn't really want to be
riding a Sportster on, I backtracked and finally hit the original route
layed out and the unit continued to follow it ok.

I am assuming it must have layed out a shorter route or something, HOWEVER,
I want the unit to navigate the route I layed out, with no surprise changes.

What's the settings I need to check out or change to what, to cure this?
Thanks a million---again. Lee.

When you download a route, only Start, Finish, included waypoints and
vias are actually transferred to the GPS.

The algorithms for GPS and Mapsource routing are different; each will
frequently produce different routes. Therefore to replicate a route
shown on the computer, be sure to include lots of vias by clicking at
various points along the route shown on the computer.

I've also found that sometimes the GPS will attempt to shortcut a
bicycle route I've set by wanting to skip some vias (Perhaps because
some of the vias may be too lose to others, but further on down the
route?).

The only solution I've found to address that issue is to convert the
route to a track, then load both onto the GPS. There is a neat utility
that will do the conversion at http://www.sackman.info/ . Note that
WINGDB3 will usually produce a track showing more points that what can
be loaded into a 76 (500 points max). Therefore, before downloading
you will need to filter the track. Do so in Mapsource under track
properties. I set the track color black and the route magenta. With
both loaded, you can easily see if the GPS wants to take any
shortcuts.

You should also assure that routing parameters for the computer and
GPS are set the same. With many vias, its best to also use the
shortest distance setting.

May be common knowledge, but I discovered if you rename a track "ACTIVE LOG"
(all caps, no quotation marks) before you send it to the GPS, the unit will
accept all the track points, including those above 500. (At least it works
that way on my 76CSx)

As someone else said, you need to build your route with waypoints that
will force the GPS to design the same route when it does its calculations.

And if you do not start from exactly the same location, or you deviate
from the route, expect mayhem until you rejoin the original route.

or buy paper maps and draw your route on them. The only way to be sure :-)

Thanks, also to Bob and Klatch.

I'll try putting in a waypoint just before and after a sideroad etc and give
it a run.

Also in Setup>Routing>, I have Guidance Method=== Follow Road.

For Follow Road Method, I have=== Faster Time.

Then under Follow Road Options I have, Off Road Recalculation=== Automatic.
Calculation Method===Better Route (???????)

Then Calculate Routes for==Car/Motorcycle with U-Turns and Carpool Lanes
avoided.

Need any changes to help the wandering off problem? Thanks. Lee.
