The Garmin 60CSX has a Data Field called "Total Ascent"

This data field is a little misleading and should perhaps be labled
"Accumulated Ascent" because it only adds up every gain in elevation without
accounting for any loss in elevation.

Similarly "Total Descent" only adds up only every loss in elevation.

Garmin verfied that this is how it in fact works.

The above data field start when you reset the elevation data. I would think
a more usefull data field would be a true difference in elevation from when
you reset the elevation data. This measured parameter is currently not
available.

Garmin advised they would put in a suggestion to add this parameter on the
next firmware update.

Perhaps if other would also find this useful they could put in a request as
well and there would be a better chance of it happening.

As I almost always walk circular routes I find it extremely useful. To
find the maximum height I have climbed I simple transfer the track to
Memory Map, convert track to route than right click on the track and
then select profile.
