I'm used to my old SPIII, where I had to transfer mapsets to the card. I
just got a 2720, and planned a trip. When I was transferring the waypoints
and routes to the 2720, I also told it to transfer the mapsets. The
transfer took a few minutes. Did I create a problem?

You were using MapSource, right?

As far as I know you can't take the maps off of one GPS unit and
transfer them to another using MapSource. When you check the Maps box
for a download, MapSource only downloads a list of the maps that were on
the SP III.

You should see those listed as "maps" on the maps tab but they are
actually just a list of the map segments that you had uploaded to the SP
III.

But if you still have the Garmin product that the upload to the SP III
was done with, installed under MapSource on your PC, you might have
created a new map and uploaded that to the 2720. What might have
happened is that when you downloaded the list of maps you wound up
having those maps selected (in pink) under MapSource.

Then, if you chose Transfer and still had maps checked, MapSource may
have created a map image file and uploaded it to the 2720.

I have a 2610, the 2720 is similar except that it does not use external
memory. So if you uploaded a detail map, it would have been stored in
the 2720's extra internal memory as a Detail Map. And you can see and
control that from software.

I think you want to press the Menu button, then touch Settings, then Map.

From the list there, go down to Detail Maps (not Map Detail) and touch
that and you should see a list of the maps you on your unit. That was
preloaded with City Navigator so you should see that, and if you
uploaded a second map it should be listed by name.

The check boxes turn the detail maps on and off for display. If you
have City Navigator and also a previous version of City Navigator listed
then you did upload a map. And, of course, if there is a detail map
from MetroGuide, U.S. Topo or whatever you had on the SP III also listed
there, it must have resulted from your transfer.

If you have two type of maps and they are both checked, you'll only see
the one that is highest in the Garmin mapping products hierarchy (City
Navigator). If you have maps from two versions of City Navigator,
you'll only see the most recent version.

I don't think there is any way to remove a detail map file from the
2720. Those detail maps are only allowed one file name (gmapsupp.img)
and (as far as I know, for the 2720) can only be changed or updated by
overwriting with a new file from MapSource. So if it is there, you can
turn it off and ignore its presence or overwrite it with a smaller
(empty?) map file to recover the memory.

I keep maps from City Navigator and U.S. Topo on my 2610, I leave them
both turned on and normally see the City Navigator maps. If I want to
see the U.S. Topo maps, I turn CN off and they are seen.

Thanks. I checked it out and didn't see anything but the original, so I
guess we're golden.
